March 2018 – Special Report on Latin America LMS Market Dynamics

Welcome to old and new subscribers alike! We’re approaching the end of March and will soon be busy pulling together the big Spring 2018 report on global LMS market dynamics.

This month, however, we are excited to publish the first e-Literate special report on Latin America Postsecondary LMS Market Dynamics. Subscribers have exclusive access to the report for thirty days, after which time e-Literate will make the report more widely available. To our knowledge, this is the most comprehensive report published on this regional market.

On to the report.

Special Report on Latin America

The inaugural special report on Latin America takes a close look at the evolution, current state and possible future directions of the postsecondary LMS market in the region. While the past decade has been fairly stable as far as the major regional market players are concerned, the last couple of years have witnessed some dramatic shifts in new implementation preferences. The graph below tracks new implementations in Latin America since 2002. It shows a clear shift away from Moodle and a preference for more recent market entrants Brightspace and Canvas. Keep in mind however, that Moodle’s installed base represents 76% of the LMS market in Latin America, the largest of any global region e-Literate covers. The report exams region-specifiic drivers behind these recent changes and well as identifying a number of factors that could affect the future development of the LMS market in Latin America.

The drivers of change include the elevation of the LMS to a tool for teaching and learning, not just a content repository; the emergence of cloud computing and storage as a viable option; more inclusive evaluation and selection committees; pressure from students for a better online experience, particularly at institutions with international exposure; and finally a distance education population that is growing much more rapidly than face to face student population.

In addition to tracking LMS market dynamics, the report includes a separate section on the growth of distance education in Brazil and implications for the LMS market.
